It Could be Wine

Gold Medal - Doubles Class
World Sand Sculpting Championships
 Harrison, BC, Canada
2003

After finishing our first piece of the summer in Gatineau, we knew that our goddess was a strong feature. We decided to make her a Goddess of Wine. Luckily we drew a good plot on the beach at Harrison and managed to complete a piece without any collapses. Standing over 10’ tall, our lovely lady pours from her never-ending vase a fine vintage. The grapes and leaves help support her arms, but apparently we really pushed limits of verticality and cutting through, which led to our winning the World Sand Sculpting Gold Medal for Doubles.

Competition was strong, with 17 pairs carving a wide range of styles. Guy and Anael Beauregard won second for “Spiritual Union”; Michel and Marc Lepire won third, Peoples Choice and Best Architecture for “Castle of His Dreams”. I really liked Dan and Meredith’s “Carousel of Time” and “The Creation of Adam” by the Dutch team of Jan and Benoit.

The photo below shows David and me in the early stages of working on the sculpture.
