la Chasse Galerie /
The Quebec Legend of the Flying Canoe

by David Ducharme and Peter Vogelaar
1st Prize and Peoples' Choice
Doubles Event at l'International de Sable
Quebec City, PQ, Canada
August 2005

la Chasse Galerie / The Legend of the Flying Canoe - 11' tall; 18 tons of sand.

David designed a very dynamic version of this popular Quebec story. The judges were most impressed with the expressions of worry and fear that were carved in such a lifelike manner on the eight loggers in the canoe. The inclusion of the church steeple in the fog greatly enhanced the sense of the canoe being in the air.

Bill Dow and Matthew Diebert from the USA won 2nd prize for their depiction of a Native American hunting buffalo. Paul Hogard from England with Remi Geerts from Holland won 3rd and Artists' Choice for a delightful piece called "The Power of Flowers".
