Salmon Dance
Expo Quebec International Sand Sculpting Contest
August 2003

We did this one in the Doubles Category at the Expo Quebec International Sand Sculpting Contest. Two masked dancers swing around a Haida Raven totem pole, from which the salmon emerge to join the dance. Once again, we learned about collapse. Our initial piece had a fine watchman on top of the pole, but we cut too much away and down he came. We quickly repacked the top 5 feet of our piece and managed to finish within the 21-hour time limit.

The quality of the work at this competition was fantastic. The Dutch team of Thomas and Lars won with their rendition of “Sampson and Delilah”. Guy and his son Anael came second with “Life Force”,  and the young Russian duo received third for their incredibly detailed “Souvenirs”. The Peoples’ Choice went to an amazing castle by the team from Italy, Allesandro and Maurizio.
