Beach Fantasy

In July 2006, Peter landed his first large sand sculpture contract, at one of Canada's largest summer exhibitions - the Calgary Stampede. Craig Mutch and Delayne Corbett worked alongside Peter to create this fantasy beach scene made from 50 tons of sand.

This first version of The Castle of His Dreams emphasized the fantasy element by having children sculpting the ornate castle and interacting with the dragon. In all, seven figures, the dragon with its nest (Delayne) and the 15-foot tall castle (Craig) were created during the 10 days of the stampede.

Thousands of spectators expressed their appreciation for the piece, and many called it their favourite experience at this year's exhibition.

As the castle scene neared completion, a classic photo opportunity offered itself when three members of the RCMP strolled by in their red serge uniforms. Peter was delighted when they agreed to pose with the sculpture.

The Castle of His Dreams

The premise of the design was this little boy, sitting beside his little castle on the beach, and dreaming of the fantastic castle he would build one day.

Peter had children from the audience pose for the various figures, much to the delight of their families. many of these people returned to see how the piece was progressing throughout the days of the stampede.

Meeting the Dragon

I imagined what it would be like if two little boys, perhaps brothers with their dog, were to come face-to-face with a fire-breathing dragon, even a friendly one. They are in awe and on the verge of running away, but fascinated by the strange sight.

Look closely... do you see the Calgary Flames logo on the boy's hat?

Li'l Roper

Although the Stampede said that they were not looking for a western connection to the sculpture, Peter couldn't resist putting a little cowboy into the scene.

Later, when a fair goer abandoned their straw cowboy hat, the li'l roper became even more authentic!

Dragon with Nest

Delayne, a stone and snow sculptor from Edmonton, quite enjoyed creating the baby dragon emerging from a cluster of eggs. If you look closely, you will see the nest of gravel, which we had to screen from the sand at the beginning of the project. Apparently, fine, clean sand is a rarity in Calgary! Peter hopes to find a better source for future projects.
