Wind
in the Trees Award: |

The 19-foot tall, 35-foot wide
ice sculpture, Wind in the Trees, was the silver medal winner in the
multi-block abstract category at the World Ice Art Championships this
year.
We had originally intended to create a stylized circus piece, however, at the last minute, decided to try an experimental installation design instead. We thought we could hang ice wind in the real trees, but found that there were not many on our site. So Peter built a small forest of trees from the white ice that forms a crust on all the natural ice blocks. We all created improvised swirls of wind and eventually added some ice "boulders" for landscaping. Even with the severe temperatures and 25 tons of ice, it was a relaxed and fun project, and we were pleasantly surprised to be so well received by the judges. It was evident to us that the Russian/US piece depicting a cubic version of Michelangelo's Creation was a sure winner in the abstract category but there were other fine-looking abstracts, all vying for second place.
