Paradigm Shift

This piece depicts a contrast between an organic world and a futuristic "techno-world". A Gaia figure dominates the organic side, which also depicts some examples of significant Paradigm Shifts through history. We included the first wheel, stone tool and written word. All carving on this side emphasized roundness and curves.

On the other side we incorporated circuit board symbols, an "electronic" mask and primarily straight lines. The "wired" high rise mixed circuit symbols with windows and had an exaggerated perspective to give the illusion of being taller than 18.5 ft.

It was a very close call between the top three pieces at the event this year. The team from Tennessee did a finely detailed dragon, encircling a pierced lattice sphere, and won the Artists and People’s Choice awards in addition to their 2nd Place. Team Ontario, always innovative, created a "Winter Oasis" and gambled that the swaying palm leaves they created early in the week would still be standing by Saturday afternoon. Their two camels looked quite at home and were proud winners of the 3rd prize.

We are quite proud of our 3-year winning streak at this event and hope that we can return in 2005 to defend our title. Our win was even sweeter in that we were working with two replacement sculptors, who did a fine job of filling in for the missing John and Simone. Thanks to Simon Mitchell and Rabi’a Gonzalez for their hard work.
