Pope Benedict XVI Peter was excited by the challenge of creating a likeness of Pope Benedict XVI in ice. This figure stood at the head of the church, giving a blessing from the altar, in a large snow and ice project in Oberhausen, Germany. Carl and Peter worked together on the snow-and-ice-tiled floor. The candlesticks were made using the latest sculptor's toy - an ice lathe. Photo by Craig Mutch

Belltower As part of the cathedral concept of the Oberhausen show, Carl sculpted a hunchback and belltower on an upper level of the big freezer room we worked in. As an experiment, he added some bits of pop bottles to make bushings and, indeed, the bells swung freely. The bells did not ring, but as an added part of the show, a small motor was set up to have them moving when the public came through.

The Three Kings All around the perimeter of the cathedral layout were scenes from the Christmas story. David worked with a Dutch sand sculptor, named Ludo, on this fine version of the three wise men. They also fashioned a star of ice, which was hung high against the dark ceiling.

Charlemagne After completing the Pope in fine fashion, Peter was asked to make a replica of the bust of Charlemagne. The original stands in a cathedral in Aachen, not far from Oberhausen. Peter was especially pleased with the positive/negative effects of using snow fill to decorate the ice surface.
