Nike, Goddess of Victory

Whistler Mountain, BC, Canada, 2006

We were invited to create a snow sculpture on Whistler Mountain as part of Celebration 2010, a month-long Olympics art event.

Whistler/Blackcomb provided us with lift passes and some meals, and the Whistler Arts Council funded the piece.

We decided to do a sculpture honouring the original Olympians, and chose Nike, the Goddess of Victory. The original for this sculpture sits in the Louvre, and it was a pleasure to hear passing skiers exclaim, "Wow! I saw that in Paris!"

We were also bombarded with questions about her lack of a head. The Arts Council is planning to install an explanatory sign, which should help the viewing public to understand the piece more.

It was a pleasure for us to finally have some strong, white snow to work with this winter. And what a fantastic location! Working at 6,000+ feet on such a beautiful mountain was a wonderful way to end our 2006 snow sculpture world tour.

We thank Toshi and Craig for taking these fine shots of our piece, and look forward to doing many more snow sculptures in Whistler.
