Blocco Mentale

Winter Olympics, Italy, 2006
Awards:
First Prize, People's Choice

Our piece was created from a last minute plan because when we arrived in Bardonecchia, it was raining and +5°C. We felt our original design was unworkable. As we despaired at not coming up with a good idea, Carl threw another wadded ball of paper on the bed.... And that's when inspiration struck! So we sculpted it - 11' tall, with stylized versions of ourselves, heads in hand, searching for our muse. The Italian for "creator's block" is "blocco mentale", which also had a wonderful pun aspect to it.

As well as winning first prize from the jury (we are Canada's first Olympic champions this winter), we won the People's Choice Award. Fourteen other countries competed. Sweden was awarded 2nd Prize and Artists' Choice, and Russia was awarded 3rd Prize.

Although the event was hampered by warm days and sun, we were fortunate to have a spot that was shaded by a neighbouring building.

The Genzianella Hotel was wonderful, and we really enjoyed meeting a whole bunch of new teams from around the world, including Peter from Kenya and Ula and buddies from Norway.
