Medieval Merriment

This was Carl’s first opportunity to design a piece on his own, and he chose to experiment with a massive deconstruction of the block. On Day 1 of this two-day event we just sliced and cut our block into small pieces. Then, as Carl and I built the columns and arch tops in a "prefab" technique, David started on the dancer and stone mason figures. It was quite a tense moment when we lifted the fully carved arch tops up to their resting place... we even survived a break in one of them.

We worked through the night, adding details and stacking blocks to create the flute-playing leader of the dance. At about 5 am one of our neighbouring sculptors invited the diehards in from a windy snowy blizzard to enjoy some hot coffee and pastries at the Renaissance bakery where she works when not sculpting snow. What a delicious moment.

Carl topped off the capitals with a fine lute and built the horn of the flute as David finished off our hexagonal base and I hurried to sculpt the musicians' legs in the final hours of the event. Once again we worked over 36 hours in the two days allotted to us.

We look forward to returning to Quebec next winter to compete in the National Championships at their Carnaval.
