The
Enchanted World of Sand |
|
In May 2005, Paul Dawkins
led a team of sculptors to create what we hope will become a successful
annual event. The Enchanted World of Sand is slated to stay open until
October 05 and to be the main fundraiser for the World Sand Sculpture
Championships. The theme for this first event was a combination of German legends and folklore, along with Canadian myths and legends. We concentrated on the stories of the Brothers Grimm and a couple from the Niebelungen legends for the German portion. Inuit stories made up the bulk of the Canadian section. In addition to some fine renderings of Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, David carved the entertaining Quebec story of the Flying Canoe. Carl created a striking version of an archaelogical dig to represent finding remnants of the Vikings' visit to Canada. He also worked on a variety of Inuit stories. Peter had the fun job of bringing Rapunzel to life, as well as a dynamic version of Siegfried slaying the dragon. The figures depicted are all approximately 3/4 life size. We enjoyed meeting other talented sculptors on the project, including Fred Dobbs, Neil Cox, Glen Greensides, and local Harrison artist Eric Johnny. Paul and Fred created some striking castles as backdrops for the famous stories. We urge you to take a trip to Harrison if you are in the area and see the show for yourself. For the $5 entry fee, you can see more than 20 stories lovingly carved in sand. |
